Even if you have a senior-level job seeker with more than 20 years of experience, you can still create an effective, strategically written executive resume that highlights your key qualifications without weighing down the reader with pages and pages of non-relevant content.
Im going to suggest a fairly radical approach to helping you create a great resume. No theory, no gimmicks, no heavy lifting. Just look carefully at examples of outstanding resumes that other professionals have created. The easiest way for you to create a top-notch resume is to take exactly what you see in these examples, and do some monkey-see, monkey-do editing, adapting and reformatting. Make your own resume match the overall style, tone and appearance of these samples!
Number Two: Keep the formatting simple. This point could easily have been under the "What to avoid when writing your resume," but I wanted to put it here as you actually get ready to write it. In a nutshell: Keep it plain and simple. Avoid the following:
How long should the resume be? As long as it needs to be, and as short as needed to keep the readers attention. Only give them enough information to make them want to keep reading. It can be very tempting to try and stuff in every bit of information about you and your achievements into your resume. Dont. Your resume is a marketing document, not a career obituary of everything youve done and everywhere youve worked. Consider that in todays world of smart phones and ipads, a shorter resume is more easily read by mobile devices.
