Its actually easier than a lot of career professionals (and resume writing services) would have you believe! But, lets be clear. Even though the resume itself cant get you the job, your resume still has to be EXCEPTIONAL. Not good; not fine EXCEPTIONAL.
Even if your resume is noticeably lacking, you can make up for it in your cover letter. Your resume letter is your one chance to prove why you are the right person for the job. Show your potential employer why you can perform the job better than others regardless of how much experience you have. Use persuasive language, but avoid sounding pushy and arrogant.
The only exceptions? For some sales professionals Ill list hobbies such as golf or tennis, as they are often necessary business skills. For religious leaders, such as the local priest or rabbi, Ill include religious information. And for a few clients Ill include outside activities, but only when they are great conversation starters, such as Olympic Gold Medalist, Professional Model, or Published Author
